The first words out of most people’s mouths when they first discover Renaud Garcia-Fons are, “oh my god…” (or something less appropriate, as was my reaction).

This French master of the 5-string upright-bass has a breadth and scope to his vocabulary that is near unparalleled (as well as his technique). Renaud has worked in both professional classical orchestras as well as jazz groups and is equally well versed in Arabic and Flamenco inspired musics (his parents hailed from the Catalonia region of Northern Spain). All of these influences come together in a stunning display of musicality and virtuosic expression.

Oh… and he was a private student of Francois Rabbath!

I’ll let you listen for yourself and encourage you to continue digging online for more. Personally, I can never get enough of his music.
