Like many (I suspect) I had heard Jerry Jemmott’s playing long before I knew of his name. I was first introduced to Jerry as the interviewer/hoist on Jaco Pastorius’s iconic “Modern Electric Bass” instructional video (you know when Jaco speaks of being a fan and starts playing some of his well known bass lines, you raise your eyebrow and do a little research).

Jerry is still active on the scene and his biography is a ‘who’s who’ of some of the best music of an era… Roberta Flack, B.B King, Aretha Franklin, and so on….

Do yourself a favor and dig into his approach. It’s all about feel, energy, and soul. He is a wonderful example of how to fulfill the role of the bass as I see it (which is one of a harmonic drummer).
